ZAM 04 - WATER AND LIGHT FOR MAKENI VILLA
Project Location
The project is implemented in Makeni Villa, a poor suburb of Lusaka, a highly populated area, where the Comboni Missionary Sisters have been present with a community since 2015.
Project description
In 2022-2023 the rainy season was poor in sub-Saharan countries and Zambia was greatly affected by drought. The rivers and dams are almost empty of water and it is not possible to produce the electricity requirement. Since March 2024 the Government has begun to cut off electricity for a few hours a day, increasing the cut month by month, until it reaches the point of providing electricity only one or two hours in twenty-four hours.
This project aims to ensure that the community of the Comboni Missionary Sisters can be energy independent. The solar panels would guarantee the electricity supply for a refrigerator, a freezer and 15 lights. Furthermore, the purchase of a solar water pump would also allow for a better water supply. This would make the ministry of the missionaries easier and more streamlined, and would give the postulants who are preparing to become Comboni Missionary Sisters the opportunity to study in the evenings.
Objectives
- Reduce reduce environmental impact
- Have the electricity needed for the community's primary needs
- Improve access to drinking water
