TG 15 - USEFUL HOLIDAYS
Project Location
The project will be carried out in Akato, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Lomé, capital of the Republic of Togo. The Togolese population is a young population with 60% of young people between 16 and 25 years old. The State is trying to improve access and quality of education in Togo and we are gradually seeing the effects of these efforts. Despite this, we have noticed that in schools more theoretical lessons are given than practical ones. Furthermore, we have noticed that during the holidays, young people wander around the neighborhood doing nothing. For this reason we have started a series of practical activities to help the kids make their holiday useful in terms of both theoretical (themes) and practical (workshops) training.
Project description
The project aims to train young people in all aspects of life, through both theoretical-practical and experiential learning. The objective is to initiate and arouse in young people the desire and ability to undertake income-generating activities that can make them financially independent.
To achieve our objectives, we organize training courses that help young people to change attitudes and perceptions of reality. These trainings also change their behaviour, giving rise to the ability to take care of themselves, to be protagonists of their own future.
Training is also achieved through the dynamics of play, sport, dance and sharing in joy. Practical training takes place through workshops in soap making, African loincloths, ointments, necklaces and bracelets, hairdressing (male and female), music, cooking, computers, sandal decoration and fan making.
These daily workshops last 2 hours and 30 minutes and young people are grouped according to the chosen workshop. At the end of the session, which will last a month, a party will be organized which will consist of the collection of certificates, dance and theater presentations, a shared meal and the display of created artefacts.
