TG 13 - SUPPORT FOR VULNERABLE MOTHERS
Project Location
The project is taking place in the Adidogome neighborhood, on the outskirts of Lomé. It is a developing neighborhood, mostly inhabited by immigrants from rural areas: many of them come from the countryside seeking opportunities to give their children better education and employment opportunities. However, the challenges are numerous, and men often leave to find better jobs while women stay behind to care for their children; the result is that families often break up.
Project description
Many people in the neighborhood live in extreme poverty. The cost of living is very high, and all expenses often fall on the shoulders of single women: rent (which is often so high it reaches 50% of their salary), food, clothing, etc. Many families cannot even afford basic medical care in the event of illness. To rent a room, you have to pay ten months in advance, which is impossible for many. Paying rent often requires great sacrifice and hardship, and the children who suffer the consequences are those who suffer from illness without enough food.
This project aims to help five courageous women, five mothers with large families who have asked for our help to overcome the challenges life has thrown their way.
Akouele has six children. During her fourth pregnancy, she and her husband went to the gynecologist, who told them they were expecting triplets. Her husband, unable to shoulder this responsibility, left her alone in the third month of her pregnancy. We met her when the twins were 10 months old; the eldest weighed 2 kg. We decided to help her by teaching her how to be a seamstress, but her earnings still aren't enough; to make the leap in quality and learn new skills, she would first need to learn to read and write. So we enrolled her in a literacy school. This year, we'd like to support her with the children's school expenses and with extra help in case of need and/or illness.
Kpogdia Mimi had a beautiful family with eight children; she and her husband were poor but hardworking. One morning, he didn't wake up as usual: he had suffered a stroke during the night. Her husband's family helped her by taking in the three older children, but Mimi still has five small children to support and a husband who was paralyzed at just 40 years old. We therefore decided to support her with food, medicine, and the children's school fees; She's currently found a good job, but the expenses are still high, which is why she's asked for our support again this year.
Mama Stelle is a disabled mother (she has congenital clubfoot and therefore has a lot of difficulty walking) of four children. The third was born with a malformation in her hands, and the youngest has been suffering from malnutrition for a year. Her husband left to find work but never returned. This year, she moved to Ghana, not far from the border. We can no longer support her as before, but we promised her that we will continue to pay for her children's schooling.
Anastasia is a widow with only one 16-year-old daughter. One day, she found out she was pregnant and that her boyfriend, who is a year older than her, didn't want to hear about it. Despite this, everything went well, and a beautiful baby boy was born. Sadly, one day, her daughter died in an accident. As if that weren't enough, a few years later, she too was the victim of an accident and the doctors were forced to amputate her leg. Her son, Jules, is now 6 years old. He's a very intelligent child, and last year he graduated from elementary school with excellent grades. Unfortunately, due to her disability, Anastasia can't work. We knew her begging on the streets for basic necessities. We'd like to help her by paying for her grandson's schooling and providing basic necessities.
Charlotte is a young woman of 27, full of dreams. However, when she became pregnant, the man she was thinking of starting a family with disappeared, but not before advising her to abort. Charlotte, however, moved on and gave birth to twins. Since that day, she's lived for her girls, never leaving them, and holds one in front of her and the other behind her back. We'd like to help her with formula to strengthen the girls' nutrition.
