TCH 01 - YOUNG PEOPLE, THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW

Project Location

Bébédjia, located in the extreme south of Chad, specifically in the center-east of the department of Logone Oriental, is a coveted area that is under great pressure not only due to the settlement of nomadic herders from the north who are engaged in agriculture, but also from other immigrants attracted by the oil project, since Bébédjia is part of the Doba oil field.

Its surface area is 2,954 km2; which represents 22.7% of the department and only 0.23% of the national territory, however, being crossed by the Logone, Pandé, Nya and Loule rivers, this region enjoys a warm and humid tropical climate with 800 to 1,200 mm of rainfall per year. These conditions make Bébédjia a favorable area for agro-pastoral activities. In particular, there is a high production of cereals (millet, sorghum, corn), cassava, various vegetables, cotton and peanuts.

The favorable environment also attracts nomadic herders from the Sahel and Saharan areas. Therefore, livestock farming, especially cattle farming, is booming. The coexistence between northern herders and indigenous farmers has in the past been relatively harmonious and the few conflicts that have emerged have been resolved peacefully. But their frequency and violence have increased significantly today. Following the drought and the start of the Doba oil project in the region, they are amplifying and becoming more complex.

Project description

Today we feel a strong pressure from young people all over the world. They have a direct and indirect impact on society, whether we want it or not. Our concern for these young people, especially girls, is to provide training that awakens their sense of responsibility. We have noticed that during the school holidays several young people get lost in the neighborhood without doing anything, others prostitute themselves, others take useless walks, etc. For this reason we thought of organizing a series of activities so that they can spend their holidays usefully.

Specifically, we plan to entertain some young people during the period from early August to early September with different activities:

  1. Presentations of training themes that will be chosen in agreement with the girls and presented by the educators; during the month there will be eight meetings of one hour each;
  2. Practical work such as making cards and postcards, bracelets, bags, hair bands, sewing and hairdressing workshops; during the entire duration of the summer camp, the girls will be divided into groups and every day, in rotation, for an hour and a half, they will carry out one of the proposed activities;
  3. Cooking course based on local products that will be held by the contact sister; every day there will be a lesson of about an hour and a half in which the girls will learn how to prepare different dishes such as desserts, lemon wine, puffed rice, appetizers, egg pancakes, etc.

Objectives

  • Promote female empowerment by developing young talents
  • Reduce juvenile delinquency
