ETH 15 - ALWAYS MORE, ALWAYS BETTER: HAWASSA SCHOOL

Project Location
St. Daniel Comboni Secondary School is located in the city of Hawassa, the capital of the Sidama Region and has approximately 350,000 inhabitants. The city is ethnically diverse and this diversity is also reflected in the composition of the school population. The school belongs to the Apostolic Vicariate of Hawassa and has been run by the Comboni Missionary Sisters since its foundation in 1991.
For the current school year, the school has 810 students, with 28 teachers and 18 other employees including workers and guards. Since November 2020, Ethiopia has been living in a state of tension especially in the North of the country. As a result, prices are continuously increasing throughout the country and many people are starting to suffer from this situation.

Project description
The language of education in all schools in Ethiopia is English: however, people generally use their local dialects so the level of learning English is still quite low. In an attempt to raise the level of education, our school has introduced a system of continuous evaluation and testing for some years now, which is slowly bearing the desired results. Furthermore, this year the government has introduced a new curriculum for all levels and this has led to the need for the school to purchase textbooks that students use in our library.
In addition to the normal teaching activities, the school offers extra-curricular activities such as the reading club, the advanced writing club, the weekly newspaper, the mini-media club, various sports and recreational activities, etc. The extra-curricular activities also have a pedagogical purpose: being together and collaborating are a precious opportunity to promote peace and brotherhood among students who are of different ethnic groups and religions, always respecting their diversity and uniqueness. The activities mentioned above are leading to an increase in the costs of stationery and teaching materials (textbooks), as well as sports equipment (balls, nets, etc.) which is imported from abroad and is very expensive.
The school offers deserving students who do not have the financial means, scholarships that cover part or all of the school fees and the costs of school uniforms and books.
Objectives
- To provide scholarships to poor but deserving students

- To maintain the high quality standards of the school
