SL 05 - INTERFAITH WOMEN TOGETHER FOR TRANSFORMATION
Project Location
Hatton is located approximately 112 km southeast of Colombo, in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The town was founded during the British colonial time. It is one of the busiest cities in the hill country of Sri Lanka and is known as the tea capital of the country, as it is the central point for most upcountry tea growing regions.
In Hatton you can find a multicultural and multi-religious environment. The main four religions of the country coexist here together: Hindus being the majority of the population followed by Buddhists, Moslems and Christians; in this context the majority are Tamils speaking people, but we can find also Sinhala families.
The languages mainly spoken are: Tamil, Sinhala and English. Since last year the area has been marking 200 years of the arrival of the tea plantation workers brought from India. Still today the struggle of the population for being recognized as citizens of the country, and their right to own their land and access to basics needs continues.
