BR 01 – EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR YOUTH AND TEACHERS

Project Location

The municipality of Cujubim is located in the State of Rondônia and has a population of approximately 27,000 inhabitants. The majority of the population is made up of migrants from different states of Brazil. Public transportation is almost non-existent in this region of the Amazon. There are 26 communities in the rural area and 4 in the urban area, forming 30 communities with Catholic units. There are numerous Protestant churches in the rural and urban areas, which have more than 70 communities.

In the center of Cujubim there is one small hospital and three Basic Health Units. The CRAS (Reference Center for Social Assistance) provides a good service to the population with various activities. There is also a shelter for children and young people up to 18 years old, until now little known and used.

Project description

In Cujubim, there are no colleges, universities and institutes that offer in-person learning and the difficulty of accessing higher education in the region are factors that contribute to the lack of training and, consequently, of possibilities for a better future for young people. During the rainy season, many people decide to live in the state of Amazonas or even migrate to the United States in search of work. This leads to another degree of dissatisfaction in the population and the high consumption of drugs against anxiety and stress is evidence of this. There is also a high rate of alcoholism and drug use among adolescents and adults.

We have also noticed that today, children and adolescents exercise a strong dominance over their parents who often encounter difficulties in relationships and in raising their children, resulting in increased stress, anguish and loss of position. At the same time, many teachers share the concern of correcting students in class, which makes it difficult for the educator to carry out his or her task and, consequently, for the students to learn. It is becoming increasingly clear that many adolescents do not know how to deal with their difficulties. Furthermore, due to the intense work they do, many parents do not have time to take care of the daily education of their children. Sometimes they are left alone in the care of older sisters or grandparents when they are lucky enough to have them nearby. The fact that many children spend a lot of time alone contributes significantly to the frequent occurrence of abuse and sexual violence, whose traumas and consequences weigh on them until adulthood. Between January and September of this year 2024, 10 suicides were recorded in Cujubim. The requests for help and psychological support are increasingly strong in the region.

Since the arrival of Sr. Dalva Maria Areia in Cujubim in 2021, the need to help young people and teachers on a human level with workshops and specific training as well as individual support has materialized. In 2024, ten young people and 105 teachers participated. At their request, we want to organize other training courses to continue in 2025 with the aim of raising awareness among young people to build an ethic of responsibility by integrating the management of emotions, and help teachers improve human relationships and find an inner balance to live better with themselves and be happy in their role as educators.

  • To raise awareness among young people about building an ethic of responsibility by integrating the management of emotions.
  • To help teachers be happy with their role and believe in the transformative action of education.
