ZAM 24 - WE TOO GO TO SCHOOL
Project Location
The project is carried out at the St. Daniel Comboni Social Development Centre (SDCSDC), located in a poor neighborhood, in an informal and overpopulated settlement on the outskirts of Lusaka (Zambia) called Makeni Villa. It is located south of the suburb of Kanyama, one of the poorest areas of the capital. The Comboni Missionary Sisters have been present in this area since 2016.
The St. Daniel Comboni Social Development Centre supports the holistic development of vulnerable children and youth through socio-educational programs, in synergy with the local community and other territorial and non-territorial organizations.
Project description
By visiting families of children who attend the Center, you learn about the challenges they face every day. Many children do not attend school due to economic instability in the family. Although the Government has eliminated school fees, many families are not even able to pay for uniforms, books and other requirements that the school requires. Many times, children are not accepted because government schools are overcrowded.
This situation leads many children and young people to seek refuge in drugs and alcohol to overcome frustration and depression. Girls, on the other hand, often find a solution to poverty by marrying at a very young age or by engaging in prostitution which leads to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of AIDS.
This project aims to pay the salaries of 6 teachers that the Social Center has hired to teach reading and writing to 200 boys and girls with the dream of bringing them to the seventh grade level.
Objectives
- Improve the educational level of children
- Keep boys away from the streets and girls away from early marriages and prostitution
