ZAM 19 – MOTHER EARTH: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Project Location
This project will be implemented at Kaande, western province of Zambia, here Comboni missionary sisters have been working. Kaande is situated at 13 kilometres from Mongu Town.
Farmers in Kaande face considerable agricultural challenges due to the region’s sandy soil, which results in high evaporation rates and limited water retention. Climate change exacerbates these issues, leading to unpredictable weather patterns that threaten food security.
Project description
This project aims to install a sustainable irrigation system at the Mother Earth Centre, serving as a demonstration site for small-scale farmers in Kaande. By showcasing this innovative irrigation method, we will train farmers in sustainable agricultural practices and adaptive, resilient strategies to combat climate change, particularly in areas characterized by sandy soil.
Establishing an effective irrigation system at the Mother Earth Centre will provide farmers with a practical model to improve crop yields and resilience. In cycle with training on sustainable farming practices, this initiative aims to empower local farmers to adapt to ongoing environmental changes.
It implies ongoing visitations to the farmers in their villages. This innovative irrigation system will also promote the moringa production.
