UG 22 – HELP FOR REFUGEES WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Project Location

The project is taking place in Kasanga and Kabalagala, two neighborhoods in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

There are large numbers of Eritrean refugees in Uganda, mostly young adults between the ages of 23 and 35. The official number is more than 40,000, and most of them are in the Kampala Kasanga area.

Project description

The main reason young Eritreans leave their country is primarily political. Refugees here in Uganda may live peacefully, but among other challenges, they face significant financial difficulties. Although some have professional training or work experience, they often cannot find work that allows them to support themselves. These situations contribute to stressful and unstable lives. This stress and uncertainty, if not addressed promptly, can lead to depression.

Most are single and live alone; therefore, when they are depressed, they often have no one to care for them, making the situation even more complicated. The aim of the project is to help people with mental health problems, helping them heal the internal wounds caused by past traumas by offering them holistic training that helps them rediscover human and religious values and use them for their own good and that of society. To allow them to focus on healing, it is important to support them with basic necessities.

To receive the correct diagnosis and medical treatment, which require long-term follow-up, doctor appointments, psychotherapy consultations, and home visits require significant travel. These individuals, who live in dire financial straits, cannot afford travel expenses. Therefore, we ask for your support in providing transportation by paying for gas, the driver we will provide, and any necessary car maintenance.

Objective

  • Improving the situation of refugees suffering from depression and stress through rigorous pharmacological follow-up, psychological counseling, and lifestyle improvements.
