UG 16 - YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SKILLS
Project Location
This project will be carried out in Kinawataka, one of the heavily populated suburbs in Kampala. many people have been attracted here by the mirage of the big city and the long insurgency in northern Uganda for a whole 30 years, which made a large portion of the population to move here from their villages.
In this outskirt of Kampala, however, there is no drinking water, no electricity or even basic health services are missing. Working conditions are so precarious that people cannot meet their basic /essential needs with their own earnings. Due to this fact, a significant portion of the youth population faces extreme vulnerabilities due to poverty, limited access to quality education, and socio-economic instability.
Project description
This project aims to uplift and empower vulnerable young people by providing them with essential life skills, vocational training, and educational opportunities, through a combination of hands-on workshops, mentorship programs, and community-based support. An initiative which will equip young people with the tools they need to overcome adversity, gain economic independence, and contribute positively to their communities. The project seeks to transform the lives of young Ugandans by providing them with the tools they need to succeed in life and in the workforce. By focusing on practical skills, education, and mentorship, this initiative will help break the cycle of poverty, build resilience, and create a brighter future for Uganda’s most vulnerable youth.
Specifically, the project plans:
- Practical market-relevant skills training in fields such as tailoring, culinarian arts, and fabric decoration, weaving and multimedia designs
- Digital literacy: Basic computer skills, internet usage and familiarity with digital tools to enhance employability and entrepreneurship.
- School training to improve access to basic education and literacy for out-of-school youth, ensuring they can re-enter the education system or acquire foundational knowledge for future development.
- Workshops focused on communication, problem solving, financial literacy, health education, and personal development to promote resilience and self-confidence.
- Encouraging youth to use their skills to create small businesses, with access to seed funding, business planning workshops, and networking opportunities.
Empowering these young people is not just an investment in their future; it’s an investment in the future of Uganda itself.
