TCH 15 – RENOVATION OF THE FOYER IN SAHR
Project Location
The project is being implemented in the Kassai neighborhood, a city in Sarh, southern Chad, in the Diocese of Sarh, bordering the Central African Republic. The social and economic situation in this community is very poor, as the population is made up of simple farmers, with women and girls representing the most vulnerable. The Diocese has 12 parishes and 1 vicariate, with a population of approximately 1,684,000 inhabitants according to the 2021 census. It is a young diocese undergoing initial evangelization, having not yet turned a century old.
The Foyer Saint Daniel Comboni, opened in 2009, is located in the parish of Saint Joseph of Kassai, served by the Salesian Fathers, southeast of Sarh in the Kassaï neighborhood. The goal is to allow them to improve their academic performance through remedial courses, as well as to continue their studies at a private high school where education is more focused. Some girls arrive at the shelter with very low levels of academic achievement and significant gaps that we try to fill with remedial classes. The shelter currently accommodates 19 girls aged 16 to 25.
Project description
This project aims to improve the sanitary conditions of the "Foyer Saint Daniel Comboni," primarily by improving the dormitory, which currently houses 19 girls. Due to the very hot climate, it is difficult to create a dignified environment in the current state of the facility. Therefore, we would like to divide the dormitory into three sections, building two additional rooms to separate the high school students from the university students and the Comboni aspirants. This will ensure a healthier environment, as well as greater privacy.
Furthermore, we plan to build an outdoor veranda that can serve as a meeting place for the girls, as well as a space for more comfortable study.
Objectives
- Ensure a healthy environment by improving the sanitary conditions of the dormitories
- Prevent the spread of diseases and infections by providing larger, more ventilated spaces
- Provide a facility with optimal conditions to ensure a healthy lifestyle for the students and young women who will be accommodated in the residence hall, allowing them to better focus on their education and training
Beneficiaries
Direct: 19 girls staying in the shelter
Indirect: their families
