SSD 11 - QUALITY EDUCATION IN MALAKAL
Project Location
The project is to be realised in the Diocese of Malakal, South Sudan, located in the northern area of the country. The three main ethnic groups in the city are the Dinka, Nuer and Shilluk; the rest of the inhabitants are composed of a large number of different other ethnic groups.
Project description
Malakal has been suffering from continuous insecurity; this has gradually led to massive displacement and disruption of the educational services. The diocese has several schools at different levels, including the incipient Catholic University, Bishop Vincent campus, Malakal. Although the schools are operating, the previous teaching personnel have not been fully recovered after severe conflicts in the past, and the existing ones do not have adequate training to perform their duties effectively. Thus, their performance is inadequate in the classroom; as a result, students’ performance is low, hindering them from having other academic opportunities to continue their education process.
Quality education as a means of evangelisation and peace building in such a context is of great importance. The project aims to benefit youth, their families, and their community. Although its impact is not immediate, education is quantifiable in students' performance and future opportunities. It is to be realised through committed teaching at the university, as well as the teaching and follow-up of a group of students at the secondary school.
