MOZ 09 - GROWING THE SEED OF THE FUTURE: SÃO JOSÉ KINDERGARTEN

Project Location

The project is carried out in the Muatala neighborhood, a very populated area of Nampula. Like many neighborhoods, Muatala is made up of houses built with traditional materials and without sanitation services. Most adults do not have a job and look for something to live on and support their families: women prepare biscuits, fried food and spend the whole day in the street selling; returning home only when it is already night. The children are therefore left alone, to play in the street as and where they want... the parents are far away and cannot worry about them, their only goal is to earn something to feed their children.

In recent years another phenomenon has worried families a lot: child trafficking. So parents leave their homes with the anxiety of not knowing what will happen. Often on the news you hear about cases of missing children and the sale of human organs. Realizing that many boys and girls were abandoned on the streets all day, and having verified the state of poverty of many families in the neighborhood, the Parish of São José and the Comboni Missionary Sisters felt the need to build, in 1999, a kindergarten to accommodate children from three to five years old, the poorest and most abandoned.

Project description

The São José Kindergarten welcomes the neediest children in the neighborhood, without distinction of religion, helping the children in their growth, transmitting and cultivating human, spiritual and cultural values. The children are at the kindergarten from 7:00 to 16:00. During the day they carry out different activities, depending on their age. The accompaniment is carried out by involving the families in the educational process.

The children receive two meals: breakfast and lunch; and after the latter they take a nap on mattresses made especially for them. To cover the costs, the kindergarten requires a monthly fee for each child, which many families are unable to pay and are therefore forced to deprive their children of this educational opportunity. With this project, we want to financially support the education of 10 poor children, knowing that they are the seed for a better society in the future.
