KE 17 – A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR SINGLE MOTHERS

Project Location

The project is carried out in Amakuriat, in the extreme North West of Kenya, on the border with the Karimojong population of Uganda. It is a very isolated area and far from most important centers, where the main communication routes stop.

People here are pastoralists though they do a bit of agriculture (especially corn and beans) which is their staple food.  However, they totally rely on the rains for harvests. And very often, the education of the girl child is often put at the background.

Project description

The poor education of women carries forward the ideology that sees women as a simple instrument for generating children, collecting wood and carrying water. There are few opportunities for girls to choose a different future. Young mothers often come to our community looking for work to support their family, for this reason we decided to give life to this project which aims to support and guide young Pokot mothers by teaching them manual work that can become a source of income for support themselves and their children.

Objectives

  • Empower single mothers so that they can support their families
  • Ensuring a future for these young women
