KE 08 – GROWING TOWARDS PEACE

Project Location

This project will take place in Amakuriat, a small village situaded on the north west part of Kenya; where population is composed of Pokot tribe. Their livelihoods and the position in the society depend mainly on the number of goats and cows they have. The Pokot tribe’s situation is complex, marked by historical conflicts, particularly with the Turkana and Karimojong tribes, often fueled by resource scarcity like pastural and water. As well, raids for livestock have historically been a major source of conflict, often involving violence and killings. Due to this situation, the children in our parish are burdened with a certain negativity and fear towards the people of the Turkana and Karimojong tribes.

The Comboni Missionary Sisters are present in Amakuriat since forty years and were always working in the pastoral field, since it is a place of first evangelization. On the pastoral side, we would like to encourage and develop in the children from the parish, through the faith growth, the capacity to discover and appreciate values and culture of different tribes. And through it to be bearers of peace and reconciliation at their home, parish and local community.

Project description

This pastoral project has arisen as a response to the necessity of children in our parish who are influenced by the historical problem of lack of peace. In collaboration with the Comboni Fathers who are also present here, we are accompanying a big group of children, knows as Pontifical Missionary Childhood. We would like to offer them a several workshops based on the Christian faith, helping them to grow in closeness to God and value of peace in us and around us; making them aware that life of each one of us is a gift.

This project aims at providing children with a place, knowledge and basic skills which will help them to grow in God’s love towards them, love towards themselves and others. This will also empower them to cope with the reality of the peace and difficulty to accept other tribes.
