KE 01 – BRINGING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST TO THE GIRIAMA PEOPLE
Project Location
The project is taking place in Adu, a small village located not far from the Kenyan coast overlooking the Indian Ocean. It's a mission established a few years ago, where the population is predominantly Giriama, who live off subsistence agriculture, primarily corn cultivation.
In recent years, rainfall has become increasingly scarce in this area, causing the population to struggle as the crops fail to fully ripen. With the lost harvest, families are increasingly struggling to care for their children, and parents are increasingly moving further away to find ways to survive.
Project description
The Giriama population predominantly follows the traditional religion; in fact, the Catholic Church has only been present here for about ten years, while there are some Christian churches in the area. A small group of Catholics has now formed the Christian community of Adu. They are the first generation, and their faith needs to grow and mature.
For this reason, we support various groups of people—young people, men and women, catechists and catechumens—with regular meetings and visits to the villages. We organize courses for different groups, both at the main parish center and in the eight chapels that make up the area, some nearby, some further away. The roads to the more remote chapels are unpaved and poorly maintained because no one thinks about maintenance. Therefore, the budget includes a large budget for car maintenance, which requires frequent checks to keep it running smoothly.
