EG 03 - A SPARK OF HOPE
Project Location
The project will take place mainly in the suburbs of Cairo and in particular in Zamalek.
In light of the crisis that Sudan is going through (caused by the clash that began in April 2023 between the regular army and the paramilitary army that is still ongoing), families who have taken refuge in Egypt to escape the conflict face many challenges that go beyond simple forced displacement. In addition to the psychological trauma resulting from the conflict, from having to leave their homes, jobs, studies and much more, women and girls have to face social and economic challenges that increase their suffering.
Project description
The project aims to be a ray of hope in the lives of Sudanese women and girls, aimed at providing the social support they need to meet their basic needs. In most cases, in fact, it is women who bear the brunt of the effort and responsibility of supporting the costs of normal family life, because fathers/husbands struggle to find work.
For women and girls, on the other hand, it is easier to find small jobs for a few hours with Egyptian families: they are often house cleaning jobs or babysitting or caring for the elderly. The compensation for these jobs, however, is not enough to cover all the family expenses, especially if there are small children.
Through our regular visits to these families, we want to provide material assistance in emergency situations, such as paying part of the rent, ensuring the children's transport to and from school (schools for refugee children are often far from their homes) and help with basic food. Our aim is to make them feel that they can count on someone's support to start regaining their self-confidence and look to the future with hope.
Objectives
- Build a safety network for Sudanese refugee girls and women in Egypt that allows them to build a new life
- Provide financial support in emergency situations in order to help them achieve economic independence and integrate into the host society.
Beneficiaries
Direct: about 30 families and about 20 Sudanese women/girls refugees in Egypt
Indirect: families and society
