RDC 17 – ST. DANIEL COMBONI SCHOOL RECOVERY CENTER

Project Location

The present project is carried out in Butembo, a city in the east of the country, in the province of North Kivu 19 km from the equator to the north, which is located on the Bunia-Goma road, the national road n. 4 and constitutes the north-central border between the territory of Beni and that of Lubero. The area is estimated at 190 km2 and includes a population of about 57,254 inhabitants.

The Comboni Sisters are located precisely at the parish of St. Kizito of Bulema. The insecurity that is felt in the surrounding villages has forced the population to flee and take refuge in the city. Observing the growing number of illiterate young "Walomba" of the parish, children who could not continue their studies due to the lack of economic means of their parents or guardians, and above all the increase in violence due to insecurities, the "Kasuku phenomenon" (an armed group that rages in the city), kidnappings, massacres and violence against girls, but also the concerns of parents about the uncertain future of their children, the Comboni Sisters took the initiative to create, on November 11, 2011, the St. Daniel Comboni School Recovery Center.

Project description

At CRS, the number of schoolchildren is increasing every year and the current seats are not enough to accommodate everyone. Besides, CRS has only one toilet where everyone, schoolchildren, boys, girls, and teachers go to. With the current population, this is insufficient. So, for next year, the number of the children will still increase and we consider it urgent and essential to build two more toilets and a septic tank so as to prevent crowding and infections. In the same way, desks are not enough and therefore we need more to give a secure and comfortable environment of study.
The present project therefore aims to improve the hygienic conditions of CSR and to buy new furniture to cope with the ever-increasing number of young people who want to enroll at the school.
